Sustaining a men’s ministry in the church belongs to the most challenging missions, but perhaps we start to use a better vision.
Every ministry in the church needs a strong vision, and men’s ministry is not any different. But do we understand the very best version and expression of this? In this Resolute Podcast, Vince Miller is joined with the pastor and author Roger Thompson from Man Within the Mirror Ministries. Today they discuss the topic of developing a vision with the men of your chapel.

Well I think I should start first by defining that which we mean by discipleship. And what i mean by that is just somebody who’s following Jesus straight into ever-growing stations of faith. And what I'm sure we tend to think – at the time you pose the question, “Why should discipleship be the biggest market of men’s ministry? ” I'm sure the default – in most men’s minds is, “How must get men into a good systematic Bible study? ” And additionally again, nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, say more with that. ‘Cause I love the manner that you say of which. Because sometimes guys arrives to you, and they've got a concept of what they imagine men’s ministry as. And it’s a business, it’s a system, it’s a task. But then they miss one other side of it. That's how do we definitely mobilize men? How do we encourage them to embrace the lifestyle of which Jesus lived, that is laid out in God’s word, and not see it as exclusively whether system or a approach. Or on the other end, only as a good Bible study, right?

But I also want to say that discipleship is not really up to the men’s ministry to do. There – it happens in a great many, many other places. So quite simply – let me say it in such a manner. The healthier the chapel, the less footprint the men’s ministry will present – or should have.

Yeah so, what I hear people saying is that we should instead have a larger see of what men’s ministry may be. Or a larger vision – not be which means exclusive or myopic around saying, “It’s only a good Bible study. And if numbers found yourself in my Bible study, next I’m successful. ” Or – if there is 100 men that found yourself in a men’s retreat, next we’re successful. It’s more about precisely how are we mobilizing men in the church? We’re giving them opportunities to grow in their faith, by utilizing their gifts and studying service and projects and engagement with the whole church – not only with us. That is a real healthier view, it actually sounds like?
Absolutely. Yes. We have got a man in our chapel named John, who retired – I don’t fully understand? 15 years ago with teaching. Very vigorous chap. And his ministry was to our church camp. Where you can find hundreds and hundreds from first-time decisions for Christ made every summer. And several thousand re-dedication. And John started taking trips to Trout Lake to do building up there. And he’s probably got 30 men in this particular church who go with him. It’s very calm, it’s under the radar. They're going up there, and people do tremendous work. They’ve given literally millions of dollars of free labor. Skilled labor to the current camp. Where children come and they are saved and discipled. After all – yeah, he’s a good Bible student, but people don’t go and study the Bible.
